Hello all,

I have just about decided to scrap my motor. I am looking at a 70 HP evinrude right now that I have about decided to buy.

However, I noticed that there is a 55HP powerhead selling on ebay right now. What I would like to know is if this powerhead and my powerhead are compatible. My motor model # is: 559HG

This powerhead's model # is: 559H8K Does anyone know what year this is?

I know that the layout of the motor is different. For example, the towershaft is back towards the head, whereas mine is closer to the carb. But would the powerhead line up to be placed on my motor? I'm sure I could find some way to adjust the cables.

Thanks for your insight.

Shane

Hi Turtle
Sorry I don't have Parts info for the 55hp models. Your motor is a 559HG begining with ser# 3001 would be a 1974 with ser#4201,a 1975 with ser#5075, a 1976. These models use magna power CD ignitions. This is a point triggered, batt powered, capcitor discharge system. Am I correct?
The model you inquire about mod#559H8K is a 1978. This model uses the Mag II ignition system. This is a magnito powered system. I am certianly not a chrysler expert, so I have no idea how much hassel it would be to make this swap, if it could even be done. Please feel free to inlighten me if I have errored here any place.

Re: 1976 55HP Chrysler powerhead swap??

Alcan,

Yes, my engine originally had the Magnapower I Ignition. It had problems years ago and a mechanic replaced it with the Battery Type Ignition. So now there is no CD module.

It seems they had a lot of problems with the Magnapower II ignition from my understanding. If the powerhead looked exactly the same I would probably try it but since it is noticeably different I will probably not take a chance.

I didn't realize the different serial numbers helped in determining the year. I'll have to check out my serial number and see exactly what year this is. I'm sure it doesn't make much difference but I would like to know.

Thanks,

Shane

I think its time to stop spending money on the Chrysler.By all means try to find the problem.
I dont think its worth any more investment.
Try to find something a little easier to find parts for and that will have some resale value when you are through.Just be sure it is sound before you buy.
