1976 70 HP Rude

Cruising at WOT yesterday the engine just quit. Just like you turned the key off and would not restart. Bulb was full of fuel and nice and hard.

When I got it home I tried to start the engine and it fired and ran for 5 seconds then quit. I check for spark and had no spark on any cylinder.

This morning I tried to start it and fired right up...have spark again.

It seems one of the ignition componets is getting hot.

I havent had time to troubleshoot the problem yet, I was hoping an experianced Mariner may know the probable cause.

that's a coil issue, problem is, how to test and find out which coil it is or is it both that are going bad. When a weak coil gets hot, it'll cut out on ya.

I dont think that a coil is your problem. Very unlikely that all coils would fail at the same time. Run the motor and heat up the ignition components one at a time until the no spark situation arises. When it fails double check and test that particular component to verify it needs replacement. I would start with the power pack.

I concur with the powerpack as being the cause. Three coils simply don't shut down simultaneously. Check your ground on the pack, too.

Well, engine started and idles for approx. 3-5 min and died.

I only have a multi-meter to test this thing with.

It seemed to pass the ignition switch test. (diconected the blk/wht wire at pack) still no spark.

Tested the stator and charge coils Stator was 687 ohms
Disconected the brown and brown/yel wires from pack, then tested pack and the ohms jumped to 1340 ohms.

The rectifier passed the ohms test also.

What I`m I missing??
