1976 9.9 Armature Plate Timing issues

Hi All;

I have a 1976 9.9 Johnson pull start outboard. I was out bouncing across waves in the Zodiac entertaining my 10yrs old. I got back to the dock and the motor would not re-fire. I almost pulled my arms off trying. I could get to run for a few seconds then try to move and it would die and not re-fire. I replaced a cracked coil, did the points and condensers, still a no-go. Finally I pulled so much that i ruined the recoil. I dropped it off at my friend who is an OMC mechanic and he informed me today that I need a new armature plate and a few other pieces as the one in there is so sloppy, that it is throwing off the timing making starting impossible.
Bad news is the part is now obsolete and not available. Would Joe Reeves instructions of denting the brass fix my issue? Is there any other suggestions out there before I head to the cottage tomorrow?

Thanks
Brock

I sent you a PM, I know someone that may have the part.

Thanks, I will look into that. I am really hoping that parts or no parts there is a fix out there. The motor runs great when it is running.

Anybody have any insight? I was hoping to get it to run this weekend. I have no issue order parts if I can find them. If there is a tempory fix, I would appreciate the info.

I have a complete one, took it off my 76 which worked, pm me if interested. Or you convert it to CDI, I did that to replace my magneto setup, used the original coils (thanks Mettyfish!).

You could also try peening around the plate, Joe Reeves explains it in a post. It does work, I tried it and it does work.

That is great I may hit you up on the parts if I need them. I was also just researching if it was possible to convert the whole thing to CDI. From what you say it is possible. Do you have a link or info for me to research further?
