Hi all;
I am unable to start my 9.9 it is a 1976 Johnson. I have new coils, new points, new condensors. There is lots of spark and more than enough fuel. I had it running perfect after it was put back together and now it is a no start. Spark is good, but not starting. I also fixed the slack in the armature plate while it was apart and reset the timing. It was working perfect until I went back to take it for a long run and it just will not start. Oh and when I put a new set of plugs in it, it started and then died and now a no go at all. Please help, I am lost.

Try seating the idle needle all the way (not tight) and backing it out a turn and a half. Pump the fuel bulb till hard, throttle all the way against the stop, pull the choke and pull the chord. If it doesnt start after the first few pulls push the choke in and try again. If that doesn't work, check compression.

compression is excellent. I think I may need a new cam roller on the caburetor. I cannot adjust the timing far enough to have it touch the arrow. It is almost like it is to small or something has fallen off it. I just had it running again. hmmmm.

Good luck with that, they are NLA is in NO LONGER AVAILABLE. I tried getting one for mine. Are you sure you haven't jumped the teeth on the tiller handle?

I double checked the tiller meshing and it is ok. I think I may have a solution to the NLA cam follower. I have some length of tubing that i am going to cut a half inch or so off, then slide it over the existing piece. That should be almost the same as the original. I think the original had some plastic over the rubber roller and plastic has disintegrated. By the way when it runs it runs brilliant.

The roller on the 76 9.9 is solid plastic with no rubber whatsoever. Even if it's not bang on due to age and slop it should still start. You may have deteriorating fuel lines or garbage in the carb, if the cam roller is still on it and not worn it should be fine.

It must still be a timing issue. Fuel is not an issue, the carb was completly rebuilt two weeks ago. Everything was fine until I was jumping waves in my Zodiac, and the timing plate got wobbly. Now that is fixed and the engine started right up no issues, then it was flooded when I went to restart it. I can start it now and it runs great. This is driving me nuts.

Anything is possible, maybe the fix for the plate didn't work.

Alright so here is it. After all the effort to look at the timing, looking at coils, electrical issues etc. I finally ensured I had good spark, but it still would not restart. I took the carb off again to have a look as I noticed there was some excess fuel in the silencer. I looked at the jets, clean, looked at the float and needle, perfect, here is what the problem was. The float bowl gasket that came in my kit was a little flimsy, I guess i over torqued the float bowl causing the gasket to squeeze inside and impairing the proper function of the float essentially sticking the needle wide open causing it to flood everytime I shut the engine down. If any knows these engines they are brutal to start when flooded. I made a new gasket and now all is well. Thanks for all your help and I am happy i looked after my spark issues for piece of mind in the future. Now if i could just fix my rpm drop off at WOT i would be truly happy.

What is the problem? Give us some history. Glad you got the flooding issue solved. Rick.
