1976 9.9 Twist Grip problem

motor: 1976 Johnson 9.9

The gears on the twist grip handle have gotten out of mesh(probably from lifting the handle to high while in use)
I am trying to reset them and have taken everything apart down to the gears in the cowling(relating to the twist grip)
Anyone worked on this??
My questions:
1. The gears where the handle bends...there is a large tooth and a large flat space that should be aligned? Where are those suppose to sit normally when they are aligned? I have seen pics of 10oclock but mine is 6oclock.
2.the lower gears in the cowling supposedly have a dot on one and a groove on the other that have to align. Are they suppose to align with the twist grip at 'start' or 'fast'
3. There is a small arrow on the handle that points to 'start' or 'fast' Is that actually supposed to point the them or in the general area?
I can't seem to the get the handle set so the arrow points to 'start' and 'fast' it seems too far one way or the other

Thanks in advance for any help.

Re: 1976 9.9 Twist Grip problem

I had the same problem on two different outboards both Johnson and one a 9.9. One of the gurus of the forum explained in detail that the gears are rather sloppy in the tiller handle and that as long as the thing actually worked that I shouldn't fret too much over where the pointer lines up on the handle. I believe that the indicator is just to help in not trying to start at WOT and the "shift" point on the handle indicates the fastest possible throttle setting that permits you to put the engine into gear. That's about the extent of my knowledge on the subject.

When the tiller handle is down, the large tooth on the shaft into the motor should fit into the large space on the tiller handle gear. the rest will take care of themselves. Then check to see if you are getting full carb opening and full spark advance in full fast position on the handle.

One other thing worth mentioning. The vertical throttle shaft inside the cowl needs to in proper mesh with the tiller handle gears as well. They are marked for you to see. Mine wasn't right and the motor (1982-15hp.) worked perfectly except I had no ability to use the idle speed setting knob on the motors side. The rod simply would not reach the landing (you'll see it) on the vertical throttle shaft.
The problem for me was the motor trolled too slow and I had to hold the tiller to maintain the correct speed. All is well now. Rick.

Re: 1976 9.9 Twist Grip problem

Thanks for the insight. I have read Leroys ramblings and its a great resource.
I am also waiting for my manual to arrive.
The two lower gears in the cowling have a dot on one and a groove on the other that have to align.
Do these have to align in the open(high idle) position or the low idle position[/B]?

The picture on Leroys ramblings of the tiller shaft gears(big tooth, flat space) are not in the same location as mine. If I align these like his picture, then my lower(cowling) gears do not align. What am I doing wrong?

Re: 1976 9.9 Twist Grip problem

Hi 10000lakes. I have been watching your thread hoping someone more knowledgeable than I would answer your question. My problem is my manual and motor are a few hundred miles from home so I haven't a reference other than a failing memory.

I would suggest you line everything up starting from the throttle plate,to the vertical throttle shaft back all the way to the tiller handle. I did it that way and never ran into anything that made me have to wonder if I was right. If I remember right some of the pieces are square fittings so in order to be wrong, you have to have them 90 degrees out of alignment which would/should be apparent to you that it is either right or wrong. The final piece to install would be the tiller handle screw and it can be 180 out of rotation but if you have any markings at all you will be able to see which way to rotate it. If you get it great and if not try again. I will have my manual back soon so I will have a better look at it then but that is a week or two away at best. In the mean time, give it a try or hopefully someone else will have a clear answer for you. Rick.
