Hello,

I have an old 90hp Chrysler Outboard that won't seem to fire up. It will fire when a small spray of starting fluid is used. After it's started it runs just fine on regular 50:1 mix. I have replaced the plugs and wires with new ones and got the timing to factory specs where it should fire at TDC in idle speeds and 32 degrees BTDC in WOT (Wide Open Throttle). Any help or advice is much appreciated. Also I got a new starter because the original Chrysler one finally gave out. This new one seems to have trouble turning over the motor and heats up to the touch faster than it should. Advice on this issue would also be helpful.
Thanks!

Hot starter ? Loose connection?
Slow turning? Could be low compression.
If you need starting fluid?? Something's wrong.
Do a compression test.
Then check the oil in the drive. Any water and rust can sieze the bearings.

Are you using the correct starting procedure?

To cold start, you must pull out the silver knob on the control box and advance the control handle as far as it will go. Then, push in on the key (you will hear a click as the chokes close) and hold it in while turning the key to start.

After the engine starts and warms-up a bit return the control handle to neutral and push in the silver knob. Now, the engine will shift into gear normally as you advance the control lever.

Well the compression is good on it so thats not it. The bearings on it are good. And the starter problem I believe is due to a cheap underpowered starter I got for $60 on Ebay. My original Chrysler starter that was made by Prestolite was a high torque one and before it gave out the motor would turn over great. I'm gonna check the spark on it and see if it's getting good spark as well.
