My daughter picked up a project for me. The motor I'll be ok with, but I've never worked on I/Os. I'm a jet guy.
What do I have? Where do I get a manual?
Volvo I assume? It just says 270 on the back of drive. Are all 270s the same? year by year
Once I get it running I'll know more about the condition of the IO.
Anything to check "before" starting engine?
Is this "tilt" only, ie. not trim ?
Should I scrap it and put in a newer IO? Or run it if it seems OK?
If these are lemons I won't stick any money in it.

That drive will outlast you if you keep clean oil in it and water out.
Keep up with the maintenance (Especially bellows changes) parts are available, along with trained techs if you should need repairs.
Yes, it most likely only has tilt, not trim.

Yes get the manual from Volvo. The part number for the 270 drive manual is 7724371. If you have a model or serial number for you engine, I can get you a manual number for it also.

tnx Don,

Boat will be here tonite. One thing I did notice during the inspection was the bellows look new.

Are symptoms water in oil or water in boat? Any other important seal areas?

I have a million questions! :)

The Clymer manuals may be easier for me to order. (ebay) Whats your thought.

What years did they make the 270?

The first thing I plan on doing is to get the motor running. It hasn't been fired in two years. Then I can get a comp check, and decide if a new motor is needed.

Will a 1976 do ok with unleaded?

I guess the book will answer these too.

tnx again

Dave

Water in bellows will get water in the drive, the ujoints, the intermediate bearing (in the bellhousing) and into the boat. Not water in the engine.
