Hey guys, I recently purchased a 1976 Evinrude 15hp. Just took it to the lake it idles great, slow speed adjustment is great. Idles down real low. I put it in gear and gave it full throttle and it would open up, but sometimes after I let off of it. Motor starts to spit and sputter and sometimes dies. Then it’s hard to start back. Is it getting too much gas? Or fuel pump issue? Thx

The manual pump stays hard. The motor idles great. Just kinda like sneezes after I run full throttle.

Sneezing at slow speed is classic symptom of too lean on the slow speed needle. Give it a tweak to the left. And be grateful it runs as well as it does. Those motors had runability problems when brand new right out of the box.

Very happy with my '84 9.9 Yachtwin. Standard oem with 15 hp carb, and middle range h.s jet. Idles well (smooth at all speeds).

'84 9.9, better by far. The '76 models about drove me nuts. I was the guy there in the shop trying to satisfy the customers. 9.9 and 15 wouldn't run, 35hps would burn up..

Running at WOT blows the excess gas out, making it leaner when you slow down. 'Till it loads up again after a time of idleing. WOT also helps clean the schmutz off the spark plugs. Fouled plugs were the major complaint.

Ok thx I sold my 1984 9.9 to buy this 1976 15hp. Thinking I needed more hp? Might have bought problems?
