Hey guys, just rebuilt the carb on this motor. The reason I rebuilt this carb is because it was spitting and sputtering on the water and hard to start after it died. Had this thing running great in a barrel. Got it to the lake and it’s doing same thing? Any ideas? I’m stumped? Thx

Sitting lower in the water when on the boat. Idle Speed, and Mixture Adjustments may be different Installed vs. on hose or in Barrel. Is it firing on both cylinders? Have you done a Compression Test? When you reinstalled the Carb, did you verify the Carb-Spark Sync?

Compression test yes. Gonna double check spark tonight. I bought this motor from a guy in December. It fired right up. I’ve done the carb sync, but not a carb-sync spark?

A carb sync would involve more than one Carb, as in making sure they were synced with each other, with respect to the Throttle valve.
Carb-Spark sync is referring to the Spark Advance spec when the carb is just about to start opening from fully closed. On your engine a Timing Light is not needed as OMC, on the smaller engines usually just had a Mark on the Throttle Cam of the Armature that when lined up with a Roller on the carb Linkage, there would be no Clearance
I guess a lot of People will call Syncing the carb to spark, Carb sync

Yeah that’s what I meant. Yeah the roller and all that is working correctly. How could I check fuel pump?

Ok I actually pulled carb yesterday and float wasn’t level. PO had plugs gapped at about 0.20? I re-gapped plugs and leveled float. Gonna try it again soon.

Doubt that plugs were at 0.20"----Motor might not run at that gap.

Well let’s just say it was very hard to get my coin style gap tool in that opening!

Add new plugs. If you can take the flywheel off to check the points, do so. Also, check the coils and condenser. A float tilted down( engine orientation)would add more gas possibly flooding the engine and carb. Also, check those leaf valves, they can cause an engine to flood or run lean. All relatively easy to check.

Your motor has points and condensors under the flywheel for the ignition. The points need to be gapped to .020. That ignition system is hard on the condensors, and points need to be clean.

Yeah I’ve read that article. So would you say 74-76 were the bad years for these motors? What year did they get better?

I fixed / refurbished a 74 model 9.9 for a fellow 8 years ago.----He loves it.----Says he would never get rid of it.-----Everybody has a different opinion on these motors.

1977 when they changed the ignition. There was actually an upgrade kit for.that motor. It included a new head ,carb and magneto ring. There were some good ones but.overall they were problematic.
