Ok. Thx. I had an 84 9.9 that I sold and bought this 76 15. Seems like a good motor other than the carb issue which I think I fixed. Haven’t put it back on boat yet. Got my 1982 7.5 on there now.

The leaf valves keep too much back pressure from re-entering the carb on two-stroke engines. During combustion and the start on exhaust sub-cycles, they are closed because of the pressure as the piston moves back. If one is loose, it will not open all the way causing not enough fuel and air entering the engine. If part of one is broken or bent in, it won't close and the carb won't draw air well enough. My OMC service manual calls for a 1/4 inch gap on the valves, but my motor is a smaller, older Evinrude. There are two screws that hold them on, you should tighten those up if valves look fine. I tighten them up every time I take the carb off.

huh??????? Pretty much none of this makes sense. Reed valves are always closed they open on the intake strk. Crankcase pressure will push on them to seal them but there naturaul position is.closed. If a reedvalve is broken or bent it will pull air through just fine. What it won't do is hold crank.pressure. Reedvalves are a maintenance free item very.seldom should you ever touch them. What manual tells.you there should be a 1/4" gap? ? Reedvalves hold more of the fuel charge in the crankcase.

they stop back pressure from escaping so that fuel gets into the cylinders and then the CC.
