I have to convert my 76 evinrude 35 from electric to manual. Do I remove the alternator coils or just disconnect them? I have a new flywheel and recoil starter etc. Looking at the service manual it looks like the alternator and stator are missing.

If it is truly a 1976 with lo-tension magneto it will have points and condensers.. A driver coil and a charge coil with 2 external ignition coils... The rope start and electric start flywheels differ as well as the driver coil...But you mention a stator so maybe it is 1977 or newer...

You will have 2 charging coils for the alternator under the flywheel. Yes they can be removed if you want I think 2 or 3 screws hold them in. You can also leave everything in there and just disconnect the red wire from the regulator to the battery cable.

Yes it does have points and condenser. I will remove the charging coils as I have to pull the flywheel. My next question is what do I do with the remote start switch. Can I replace it with a on off switch as there is no need for one with start position and I will have to relocate it to the rear of the boat. I will eliminate the electric choke for manual operation. So the wiring harness is down to the two blue/ blue white stripe wires going to the points and condensers from the switch...is that all I need to get it to run on the electrical side?

Hardwater Fisherman I will have to change driver coil?

Change nothing in the ignition only remove the copper coils with the yellow wires nothing else. Then just put the new flywheel on and go. You can buy a cheap lanyard safety switch to put on the motor for on/off operation.

If you look in your service manual it should show that the rope start driver coil ohms at 1.45+/- .4.. And the electric driver coil ohms at 2.70+/- .7... I tried a rope start driver coil with an electric start flywheel and it had a high speed miss.. I never tried the other way though so I do not know... You may also need to find a rope start engine cowl...

If you check a parts diagram for your motor you will see there is 2 different driver coils.. There must be a reason.

You will also need to get a cowl for a Rope Start engine. The Cowl for the Electric model isn't tall enough to accommodate the recoil

I’ve ordered another coil for rope start. I found a cowl for recoil start... it’s a Johnson but it fits. I will hook a lanyard safety device for a kill switch.
