1976 evinrude 6hp won't idle

I recently got this motor with a boat. Got it running but was missing like crazy so installed new champion j8c plugs. Runs better but misses at low speed. I don't know what the lean/rich setting should be. Would that be the cause? I am a total newbie to outboards.

good little motor ..... usually a good carb clean will do ..something you may have never done!

Troubleshooting outboard

you should change the impeller and gear oil
lots of utubes on this

it is a basic 2 coil magneto with points and condensers

old condensers may fail after x years ... points may need replacement or a simple polish with 200grit paper and some carb cleaner..

see the write up on magnetos

coils depending on year may be all cracked...you will have to pull the flywheel

do not dispair on what needs to be done ...lots of help here .

basic carb bugs . yours has no adjustable needle at the bottom it is a fixed jet behind a 7/16 nut... just remove the nut and blast away with carb cleaner DO NOT DAMAGE the jet with a metal poker ....use mono filament line to push out any crud if any blast all orifices with air ( if you have no compressor use a key board spay can.... $4 at the dollar store.

Compression test.-----These had a rather poor quality head gasket.----Sierra replacement is improved and the best deal.----Does spark jump a gap of 1/4 " ( 6 mm ) or more.
