1976 evinrude 85 not shifting on stand

hi,i need you folks to bail me out again.i have a 1976 evinrude 85(856996)that ran great last time out(8/16)I have since scraped the hull and the motor is in my garage on a wooden stand.with the plugs out and not wired up,i can't shift this while turning the flywheel by hand.is this an electric shift?or do I have other problems?has good compression,low 109 and high 118 and started easy and ran smooth.as always thanks for your help

No a 76 model is NOT electric shift.---------It is a " powershift ll " system using oil pressure and a servo cylinder.---------They shift easier running but will also shift manually as well.-------Compression does not sound good to me.---But gauges vary I guess.

Also, try turning the propeller a bit to realign the clutch dogs as they can prevent shifting on a non-running motor if the dog's high point is aligned with the gear's high point. Rotate the prop while you move the shift arm...

ok,thank you.motor ran great ,so i'll try turning theprop a bit and shift.
