1976 Evinrude won't run in gear

I Have a 1976 55 hp Evinrude that starts fine and the carbs have been rebuilt. When I put it in forward or reverse the engine dies. The engine seens ti idle fine but I can't go any where. Any ideas?

Most likely that you are dropping a cylinder (it will run on one cylinder with no load). Start with a compression test, then do the spark test. Do both with all plugs removed unless you have an inductive tester to check the spark with the engine running.
