I have a 1976 glastron 165 hp that I bought a few weeks ago. This is my first boat. I had it on the water for a few hours this last weekend and the engine temp. was running really hot. Then the motor started ticking. It was a pretty syncronized beat. I am going to take apart the engine and check to see what is causing the tick. Do you think that the impeller is bad and this is what caused the engine temp to overheat? The engine temp got as hot as 240. Do you think that the ticking noise is a bent valve that was caused by having it at such high temperatures for a long period of time?

I think people would ask you to post what engine and drive (year, model, etc) you have to start with.

I wouldn't "take the engine apart" until you get some direction to move in.

Impeller would be a good place to start looking. If you ran it hot long enough to get a valve to start ticking, you've probably done some damage.

I'd start with the impeller for the cause of the problem though.

Re: 1976 glastron 165 hp overheating

It is a chevy 250 cu. in. inline six. I pulled off the thermostat housing and there was no thermostat in it. I changed the spark plugs, spark plug wires, condensor, and points. The engine started and ran good. I checked the compressions to each cylinder. One was 125 and the rest was 90's. Do you think that the heat caused the rings to go bad? The ticking noise is no longer there. I also replaced the valve cover gasket. As far as the heating problem goes. I pulled the hose running from the gimbal to the thermostat housing and started the engine. There was no water running out the hose untill I got the engine's r.p.m's up. I took the boat to the marina and had them change the impeller. Do you think this was a wise step? Do I need to put the thermostat back in? I ordered a thermostat and gasket. Or will this allow the garbage from the lake to collect on the thermostat?

In order for the cooling system to operate correctly the thermostat must be installed.

it would be nice to know if the marina changed the impeller housing and wear plate too. install your thermostat. take it to the water and see what the temp does. the IL250 is a good motor. hopefully the ticking will not come back.

Thanks Guys. I am hopefully going to be able to pick it up next weekend. I will put it on the water there and see if it overheats. I will keep you posted. Again thanks for the help.

Not to burst your bubble, but 90 PSI and 125PSI are very low for that engine, if it's been sat for a long time, the values might come up after a bit of use, but you should be expecting 150 on all cylinders..

The engine sounds like it might be a bit tired..
As mentioned earlier you need to install a thermostat, the boat cooling system is NOT like a car system and does need the thermostat to work properly..

Re: 1976 glastron 165 hp overheating

I have the same combo, mine is a V184 with the 165. I had the same problem, overheating. replaced impeller, cooling problem solved. I believe the overheating caused my head gasket to go because I now have a little water in #1 and #2.

If this helps my V-184 will do about 40 at 4300 rpm. My compression was 145 on all but the two cylinders mentioned above.

Try Seafoam in the engine and see if you can't get the gunk out. Mine had sat for 4 years and it took a caouple of tanks with seafoam in it to get the crud out.

Good luck

I have a can of seafoam at my house. I will put it in the boat this weekend. Thank you I never thought of that. Yeah the compression on all of my cylinders is scary low. My father and I talked of pulling the motor this winter. My father knows alot more about motors than myself. I have only learnt from reading my new manual and working my way through it.

I got my boat back this weekend. I had it in the water for about three hours pulling a tube. Everything seems to be running good. I had the impeller changed and the housing. The temperature didn't get over 140. Thanks for all of your help guys.
