I just bought a 1976 16' holiday that in great shape. It has twin 25hp Johnson (76 models) engines on it and the look like the are factory installed. Does any know if Starcrafts came with twin engines? It has dual ignition key and there are no marks on the transom showing if there was a motor in the center of the hull.

I don't think Starcrafts were typically "packaged" motors as we've seen NO consistency in what they've been rigged with. I think the boats and motors were ordered separately and installed at the dealers.

Re: 1976 Holiday with twin motors

Ill post some pictures when i pick the boat up at my marine mechanic. I was having trouble starting one of the engines ( no spark on the top cylinder) should have it back earlier this week. The mechanic check the boat out and said that he never seen one of these and that it had been in salt water. I found receipts from the previous owner that he had work done on it in Florida, the boat was from Holland, Michigan. Ill post the pics ASAP!

Twin motors fascinate me. I think they look cool and the redundancy with the second motor appeals to me.

You buy this boat for Lake St. Clair?

Ya. Lake St Clair and Lake Erie, Im only 20 min from both lakes. The boat came with all fishing gear too. Its got 2 long down riggers and 2 short ones, 4 rods with counters on the reels, 4 boxes of lures and tackle. Never used down riggers before, but im going to learn.

I've actually been considering doing this to my boat, it has an 85hp Johnson on it now, I thought it would be nice to have two smaller motors that equal close to the same HP. I've wondered if I went with newer motors if I wouldn't also save on weight. The current motor is a 78 model. I'd like to see a picture of it.

Re: 1976 Holiday with twin motors

I have seen a few Starcrafts with twins. One I remember on craigslist was an 18' Holiday with twin 35hp Evinrudes. Seems I also remember another 18' Holiday with twin 50's. I would love to hang twins on my boat. The cool factor would be huge, but not very practical for me.

Holland Michigan is my neck of the woods.....

Going to take the Holiday for a rip this morning, lets see what 2 motors will do. Going to bring the GPS to tell what speed im at. Does anyone know what wire i would hook a tack up to. Im what to install 2 tac's on the dash to tell what the motor's are doing.

Gray wire in your control box(es) is the pulse feed for the tach(s).

Re: 1976 Holiday with twin motors

Well i got both engines running today, need to rebuild the carbs and maybe adjust the timing. Idling a little bit ruff, but not bad. Going to pull the Johnson's off this weekend and start removing the transom wood. (rot on the starboard side) Already got a sheet of 3/4 plywood. Glad lots of fellows have pics on how to changed transoms in S.C. Does anyone know what the wiring diagram is for a 1976 Holiday with electric start. ( need to redo my wiring)

Re: 1976 Holiday with twin motors

Just a reminder since you said they where idling rough. The 25hp johnson I got to use for a summer ran great on fresh non eth fuel. When I used some eth fuel and it was a month or so old with no stabil the motor would not start very well and did not run as good. Switch to non eth fuel start right up.

It's getting more and more difficult to get non-ethanol fuel, and they do not mark the pumps very well around here either.

Re: 1976 Holiday with twin motors

Well i got the boat all back together and got the boat in the water today, everything went smooth! The Johnson's run good, but i was disappointed by there performance. GPS speed was only 21 MPH's at WOT! Thought it would have gone atleast 30 MPH. I guess there "OK" but i want way more punch than that! I was wondering if i put a 90 HP Evinrude on the would it be to much for it. The boat is rated for 85 HP and my friend has the same hull (only a 87 model) and it is rated for 90HP. This should make the boat rock i would think. I would like to aleast get 35 MPH. Anyone with a 16' holiday have a motor on there boat like this? and what kind of performance does it have? I found a good deal on a 90HP Evinrude 1985 with the controls and power trim for $800.. what ya think?

I would't think you would have any trouble putting the 90 on it. My 1984 16 SS was rated for a 90.

When I was a Lad ( long time ago ) My Dad bought a 16 ft Wizzrd overnight cruser It had twin Scott Atwater engines He fished a lot and wanted a second motor I skied a few times and the two 35 hp engines were not much better than I Motor ,big difference was the power it had but not the speed. About pull your arns of to get out of the water but not real fast. BIG IS BETTER. Sure like my 22 holiday with the 200 Johnson OB.

I'd make that move in a heartbeat. Better hold onto something when you nail it. I think that's a prop-rated motor. My older crank rated 90 pushes my 18' to 40MPH.
