I have a 1976 Johnson 35 Hp that I inherited and would like to repair myself. I tried starting it and it ran good for about 2 seconds and just cut off. I sprayed carburetor cleaner in the carb but it did same thing. Any ideas on what might be wrong or what i can do?

I also tried to remove the flywheel with a flywheel puller and impact wrench and it is seriously stuck and would not come off. Any ideas on getting the flywheel off? I wanted to clean the contacts on the points with a nail file since the motor has been sitting for so long. Or should I not bother trying to remove the flywheel?

Third question. I want to replace the water pump. Once I remove the lower unit bolts, will the lower unit just come out or is there anything else I need to disconnect to remove it? Also, should I just replace the impeller on the water pump? Thanks. Any suggestions

Sounds like the carburetor may be dirty. But you should check all systems before proceeding, especially compression. Is the paint discolored on the powerhead? Those motors had a very serious problem with overheating and destroying the pistons when they did.

Get mean with that flywheel puller. It will come off.

Bolts at the side of the lower unit, plus the nut on the stud at the forward end. Plus disconnect the shift rod.

JMO, unless you are going to run it in pristine clear water, find another motor. That one can't tolerate water weeds or trash. Did I mention overheat??
