Hi I took the carb off today and float and needle are brand new from bein rebuilt I blew it all out with compressed air. I found that my slow speed needle was completely loose. Could tht have been it? And how far should I tighten back? It's a 1976 Johnson 40hp seahorse it wouldn't start and fuel spills out the carb when turned over

I'd take the fuel bowl off and make sure the float is parallel to the carb body as it is held upside down. I actually like to give it a little less height (slight upward angle) to keep from not shutting of the fuel. But that is just me. Then the low speed needle has a nut as an other adjustment to the needle. Tighten it up until you can just be able to still turn the needle itself with some effort. Then turn the low speed needle in gently until is just touches the stop. Then turn one turn out for a starting place to get the engine running. The final adjustment will depend on your setup and may need readjusted on the water for best slow speed mixtures...

As I understand them, absolutely. If it's all the way out you're dumping fuel, flooding. I pulled the carbs off mine late last year and cleaned the needles. I counted the turns in at 1 1/4 from bottomed as I recall for both carbs. Mine runs well now (after clearing the idle supply circuit in the bottom of the bowl again).

That was the problem I tightened the one but all the way then the needle and turned the needle out 1 turn and it runs fine just gotta get on te water to make her perfect again. Anyway to make that from not coming loose again?
