I have a 1976 johnson 85hp. I tried dropping the lower unit, undoing everything i thought neccasary, but it will only drop about 1 inch. Now its apparently in gear and will not go back up or any further down. What is it hanging on?????

It's hung up on the shift linkage. The connector for it is under the carbs. I find it easier to take the carbs off (clean them at the same time), but it's not 100% necessary.

ok where the linkage hooks up to the rod(under the carbs)there no way to break the connection. all of the other connecting points have a nut at which you can break the connection.its as if id have to let the whole bracket go down with the rod. does the rod have to come all the way out or just to a certain point?
