I am working on a 76 Johnson 9.9 that I have tussled with a time or two before. The last time I saw it the owner had run it in thick weeds and had not monitored the water output. He ended up blowing the head gasket. I replaced the upper water tube grommet, head gasket, etc. It ended up running really good considering and he said he used it several times after that but the last time out it started "coming out of gear".

I stayed in gear fine in my barrel so I put it on a boat last night and ran it a few minutes. It does sorta come out of gear. The is no grinding sound, it doesn't pop out of gear with any sort of loud noise it had hit something, it is just out of gear. Pulling it as far forward as possible will get it to engage again but I had to hold it there to get the boat back to the ramp.

Does this sound like a linkage issue or a rebuild the LU type of issue? I know nothing about this sort of thing...green as grass. How should I proceed?

I did check the LU for water intrusion...lube still looks like honey. And, I checked the shift lock and linkage at the top. All looks good there.

Possibly the shift linkage at the lower didn't get hooked up right during an impeller change, or the clutch dog/forward gear is worn.
