I have a 1976 Johnson 85hp motor that I am installing a new aftermarket tilt trim switch on. It has 3 wires as does the trim motor. My question is can I just use power to the switch, and ground from the motor with the switch being power up and down. No relay, or solenoid just wired directly from the battery. Or will this cause some kind of problem? The reason I ask is the trim has a new pump on it as well but I don't have any of the other parts. (solenoid, relay etc.) But it should work without it. I have tested this with my battery jump pack and it seems to work fine. Is there dander of overloading something?

i used a , on off on switch connect the + to the off witch is the center 1 motor wire to on & the other motor wire to on & earth to engine motor . the trim motor should have a thermal overload switch inside it , like the 2wire motor

If you don't have a solenoid or relay for the up position you'll burn up your trim switch. The down position doesn't need any. Less current draw going down.

The manufactures were smart enough to put thermal switches in the motor for that matter , cheers

It's not a matter of the thermal switch in the mtr, it's a matter of the t/t switch in the control handle. They will only take so many amps. That's why you have a solenoid or relay for the up position where there is the most load.

Absolute fact- Burnt up a $38 aftermarket switch I mounted on my pontoons transom before i found it HAD to tied in in FRONT of the relay--

It's a matter of how many amps the toggle switch will handle. The BRP/OMC's weren't built to handle the amps.
