1976 Johnson V4--Resto

Hello Everyone,
Thought I would post so pictures of my 1976 Johnson V4 Resto.

I got lucky and found this outboard through a friend I work with. It was rebuilt by one of our more reputable marine dealers in the spring of 08 and the former owner had saved all the paperwork to prove it. I ended up paying $500.00 for the outboard and the an old 18' smokercraft modified tri-hull it was attached to.
I kept the outboard and parted out the rest of the old smoker craft. It had a nice working CMC tilt trim unit that I sold on eBay for $550.00 so right away I made $50.00. I then sold off the Springfield seats and posts, live well, minkota trolling motor, and the trailer for a total of $600.00. Gutting the boat and scrapped it out at the salvage yard. Thought I would make a killing on the aluminum......Wrong.... only got a penny a pound $4.65, but it got it oout of my driveway.


Any way here are the pictures of the outboard. Sorry, I have getitdoneitis, and didn't take any before paint picture. I always think of it afterwards.

Not a stock paint job, but I'm am Merc guy at heart and thought it just looks good in Phantom Black. Actually I just had the phantom black left over from another Merc job. I'm really just a cheap ***.

I Want to thank ezmobee for turning me on to Nana's Johnson decals as it really made all the differance on the final look. Would really have been plain without the decals. These deacals are top notch and fit very well with only minor adjustments. They can even be clear coated for extended wear. They come well packaged with application directions included.

I know everyone is going to notice the wicked skeg damage on this outboard.

Just to set everyone at ease I ordered a weld on replacement and I'm just waiting to get in the shop at work to tig weld it on. I think I will wait until I get the outboard on the old Starcraft. I really want to see what difference, if any, it will make on the steering and handleing before repair and after.

Are you sure that is an 80? I was not aware of an 80 in 1976...... it looks great.

i read a book from the 70s that stated the highest o/b hp yet was 120

This is a 85hp V4, I just ordered the wrong hp decals. Rather than wait on new ones I installed the 80hp decals. Oh well, should make for interesting conversation with the Johnson die hards at the lake.

it look great,the only way people can tell its not a 2009 is it dont say E-TEC HA,HA.keep up the good work. Mike

Thanks everyone for the kind words. I really went all out on this outbaod and hope it looks good for years to come.

Next on the list is repainting the hull but that is for later this fall when I have saved up the Bennies for a soda blast and to rent time in a down draft paint booth.

looks good, i've got a 1975 115 and just found out today its got blown head gaskets causing overheating! Checked out the cylinders and got one with scorchings! Oh well, gonna throw some gaskets back on and get er' done!! lol
