1976 merc 1150 not charging batt, or is it?

1976 merc 115hp inline 6<br />been having batt troubles, but i cleaned the terminals real good, think that may have been a problem...BUT...<br /><br />at fast idle, about 2000rpm, im getting 12.71 volts at battery terminals<br />im also getting 12.71 volts at rectifier<br /><br />with engine OFF, i get 12.9 volts at batt terminals...<br /><br />why would it be higher voltage with motor off, is my recitifer gone the way of the do do bird?

You get higher voltage with the engine off because there is no load on it. Check your rectifier.

check rectifier, and it was bad. got new one(radio shack, $4) and now i get almost 14 volts .<br />chris1956 turned me on to this rectifier.<br /><br /> rectifier
