After 1 year of off and on fixing I have put this used boat in the water for a shake down cruise. It seems to be running smooth with no missing but it would not go past 4400 rpm. So my question now is: Is this a prop issue or is there something else to look at. I read another post about the switch box issue but my motor does not seem to be missing. Any info from the old motor merc guys and I did say old motor not old guys would be nice. Thanks again. With all the help/ info at this boat site I have been able to get this motor running not knowing anything about two stroke mercs/old inlines. This is a great site with alot of knowlege.

If the timing is set properly and the carbs are clean, there is a good chance that it is over propped. Has it ever ran up to RPM since you have owned it? If not it's probably the prop.

Re: 1976 merc 1500

Hi Laddies,

This was the first time I have taken it to full throttle since I have owned it as when I bought it, it was from an auction and had issues with the water pump and reverse. The water pump has been fixed with guidence from you all at iboats and the reverse issue was not from me doing the water pump but from miss rigged throttle /shift cable that was 1 1/2 iches off the wrong way. I'm telling you this so you understand what I have done with this rig. So it would not surprise me that someone put the wrong prop on it. If I wanted to check the timming should it be done on the muffs or in the water. I know that the idle changes in the water (lower) but on muffs with a higher idle will that change the timming much? Thanks in advance

I've run mine out of gas, then just checked max advance while cranking it over.

I try to start it a few times with the choke first to make sure it's out of gas.
