I have a 1976 Mercury 402 40hp. It ran fine a couple of days ago. Today I went to take it out, I could not get it to start. The motor only made a single click noise. I know it is not the battery, because I took the battery from my truck and tried it. Plus everything else on the battery still worked.

I just want to make sure what I think it is to be correct. I believe it to either be, the starter, or the starter solenoids.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Tim

If the solenoid clicks I would have to believe it is the starter motor. Could be wrong here but that is usually the way it works on a car starter. The click is the solenoid engaging which usually means it is doing its job correctly.

Well not sure what is clicking, I haven't even taken anything apart yet. I just here a single click when I turn the key. The single click is coming from the motor is all I know. Assuming it is the solenoid or the starter.

Thanks for you advice. I am hoping to be able to work on it some today. I just do not want to buy a part that is not needed.

Thanks
Tim
