I have posted before about the state of my 2 bbl Rochester carb for this motor. In summary, I 'over-cleaned it such that the zinc plating and any other anti corrosive coatings were dissolved and removed. Over the winter (Northeast US) while my boat hibernated, I purchased a 'new' carb. It is not an exact 2 bbl Rochester replacement. I think it is more akin to the mercarb. This is what I purchased (link to Mercruiser 233 carb or here carb parts diagram ). As far as I can observe without taking it apart, it is nearly the same as my original carb except that the intake plate for the original has two idle mixture screws and the new has only one idle mixture screw. Also, the intake plate on the older carb had a vacuum PCV fitting and the new one did not. So, I swapped the intake plates.

I adjusted the choke setting on the new carb, and after unwinterizing the boat, I started the motor. It runs 'well', but it will not idle (this is the not well part). To start the boat, I either have to have the throttle lever forward a bit so it idles high (>1000 RPM). If I remove the throttle cable from the carb, I have to wedge the tip of a flat head screw driver between the idle screw and the idle cam of the carb for it to start. The idle adjustment screw on the carb is all the way in yet is does not contact the idle cam. As a result, the the carb butterflies close, and the engine dies.

Do I have to bend the rod going to the carb pump (I forget the real term) so the idle screw contacts the idle cam. I did try replacing that linkage with the linkage from the old carb, and while the linkage was a different shape and was bent more such that it brought the idle screw closer to the cam, it just barely touched the cam, if at all.

What do you think I should do here as an adjustment.

Thanks in advance.

Question for the brain trust. When I activate the the accelerator pump on the carb by hand it squirts fuel into the card but only on one side. The picture above shows fuel going in on the left (red arrow) but nothing on the right (green arrow). It should be both sides, right?

Correct. There are linkage adjustments but I don't know them off hand. Do you have a rebuild manual?
