Since it was raining this morning, i figured i would go through the used wiring harness i just purchased to make sure all the wires were good, and that the connectors were fine.

Everything turned out fine, with the exception of two things. Im missing one wire? Its the ground wire that comes off of the starter solenoid to the harness.
Can i just run a ground wire directly from the solenoid to the ground on the cowl?

Also, the brown wire from the harness has two different schems for it. The 1970-1978 (L6 1150, 1350, 1400, 1500) schem shows the brown wire going to the second pole on the switch box assembly. This is the way its wired now, but the wiring is all homemade and i dont know if its correct.
The second schem for 1976-78 (L6 900, 1150, 1500) shows the brown wire connecting to the rectifier....
How do i know which one to connect it to?

My serial number for my motor is 4311823 which in turn should make it a 76 motor....

1) Does the thick black wire from the motor harness bolt to the cowling? If so, ground the solenoid to that bolt.

2) The brown wire needs to be connected to one of the AC posts of the rectifier for all universal Marine tachometers. Merc made some old "Mercury" tachs that were unique and counted pulses from the switchbox. Merc gave these up in 1975 or earlier. it is likely you have the universal style, as they are everywhere.

1- Yes, it does bolt to the cowling...
2-I am putting new gauges in anyhow... Should i just go off of the rectifier? The old tach that was on there was pretty vintage, but it has been removed...

PS-THANKS

Yes, the new tachs run off the stator pulses. The brown wire needs to connect to one of the AC posts of the rectifier.
