Just curious... Any info is highly appreciated!

If you don't know about a Mercury engine, then how about outboard engines in general?

brian,

I don't know about miles, because I don't know the speed.

However, engines of that size, at a reasonable cruise-not WOT, burn about six gallons/hour.

There are too many variables for an accurate prediction, but if you're looking for a guess: at a constant speed of about 4000 RPM on a planing boat, about 3 - 4 MPG. Skiing is a whole different ballpark.

I own one of those mariner /merc 1983 model and it runs between 3 and 4 miles per gallon on an 18 ft. center console cobia ...checked several times. If ya push it real hard it will drop below 3 miles per gallon . if ya baby it and the seas are smoothe it will exceed 4 miles per gallon .

Hi Brianmerc,

I had a 79 90hp inline six merc on my 17' half cabin for 21 years, when running to my most common fishing spot about 30 miles round trip across open sea I used to use about about 6 to 7 gls depending on sea conditions. This is pretty much the same as Flatsman gets with his rig. As a comparison, my 2000 90hp 3cyl Merc on the same boat uses just under 4 1/2 gls (around 6 3/4 mpg) on the same trip but has a much faster cruise speed at 4000 to 4400 rpm (up by 7mph) and an extra 6mph at WOT because it can run an extra 2" of pitch (new prop)

Bob
