Hi all,
I have a 40hp 2cylinder outboard Blue band Mercury 1976 model pullstart motor.
Tried to start it up the other day and ripp cord broke. Pulled top section off to replace cord. I noticed that underneath the pull cord assembly were 3 cam like lobes and a spring incased in a metal frame. These fell out but I managed to figure out how to put them back together. What I also noticed on the top of the pull cord assembly is a spring like device also with a cover. Put everything back together but noticed that the ripp cord doesn't retract all the way and also when the cord is pulled the motor is not turning with it.
I thought this would be a easy fix, but I guess not. Is there anyone within these forums that can help me rectify these problems? All help would greatly be appreciated. Thankyou.

If I were you, I would get a repair manual from www.seloconline.com. I have one for my particular engine, and it describes how to repair pull cord assemblies. You will likely need the same one I have as well.
