I have a 1976 mercury 402 40 hp. When I turn the key, it will not turn over. It makes a single click noise. I know it is not the battery, because I took the battery from my truck and tried it. Plus everything else on the battery still worked.

I believe it is the starter or the starter solenoid, I just want to make sure so I do not spend money on a part I do not need.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Tim

I lowered the motor, without hooking up the gas. Just wanted to see if it would try to turn over. It now wants to turn over. I did not see any loose connections. So now I am very leery of taking it out on the water until I figure out what exactly was causing the problem.

Though I am pretty sure it has to be some kind of loose connections. If anyone has any other idea's what it might be. I would appreciate it.

Thanks,
Tim
