Hello everybody, I'm new on here & looking for some help with my boat motor. I have a 1977 140 Evinrude. The motor runs great but I'm having some problems with the lower unit. When I take off the motor does fine out of the hole but just after I break plane it feels like it kicks out of gear & the prop quits turning. I've adjusted my shift cables & linkages several times & I'm pretty sure they are adjusted properly. It started a few years ago while running down the lake planed out & full trim once in a while I'd hear a skip in the engine. Now I'm thinking that was the starting signs of the problem I'm having now. I took the lower unit off tonight expecting to find the ears on the forward gear & clutch dog rounded off but they were just fine, nice & square. Now it's got me stumped. Where do I need to look now? I've tried a few different used props thinking it might be a spun prop hub but it has done it with all the others I've tried. Could there be enough flex in my cable making it do this? I'm open for any & all suggestions. Thanks!!

Re: 1977 140 Evinrude problems

It could be something a simple as a shift cable adjustment. If the shift cable is not adjusted properly, it is possible that the clutch dog is not engaging completely into the forward gear and is slipping intermittently. Remove the shift cable at the engine end, put the control box in neutral and readjust the cable. If it is the clutch dog slipping, this is usually a pretty violent/abrupt slippage which will quickly wear the clutch dog and the mating surface on the forward gear.
