I'm not sure if the 77 had a tell-tale indicator, I have a hard time remembering when that came into be'ing. Other wise out the two upper holes in the upper exhuast housing, and out the thru-hub exhaust in the prop. The two upper holes' when the thermostat opens.

Very easy to tell if your motor has been retrofitted with a tell tale. Remove the cowl and look to the rear starboard corner of the lower cowl. Is there a black rubber hose running from the block to a 'nipple' in the lower cowl? If so, then yes, you have a tell tale. If it is not functioning, there is a restriction in the cooling circuit, the water pump is not functioning, little critters may have built a nest in the nipple and/or water line, restriction in the water intake area, etc...

thanks for the info. now i need a little more help. it does have the hose and nipple, but no water. hose and nipple are clear of obstruction. so i am guessing impeller or water pump. is the water pump and impeller not togather on my motor? if so wouldn't i be better off changing all? never worked on boat but can work on cars am i going to be able change these out or ami going to be over my head? any help would be very appreciated. thanks

it is a fairly easy job. you have disconnect shift linkage, and drop lower unit, you need this manual, click johnson manuals top right of this page.

Could be water pump, restriction in cooling circuit, or blocked water intake area, so be sure to check each of these while the lu is down, or you will be upset if you have to drop it again. While it is down, flush compressed air or the garden hose up the water line, then backflush it down, ensuring it is free. Clean out the water intake area around the screen. Be sure to grease the splines of the drive shaft, and put the new o ring on the shaft. Also be careful when re installing the lu, that you do not shove the grommet on top of the impeller housing into the housing with the water line, as this will restrict water flow. You will see what I mean when you have it down.

The following may help, but as Tash said, nothing beats having a service manual with you.
