1977 500 Merc Reviews

<ahem> I'm new around here and this is my first post, so please to the gurus and experts, have mercy on me.

I just bought a boat that has a 1977 Merc 500, 50 hp, motor. At any rate, for those out there who have an old merc like this one, what sort of issues do you regularly experience with the motor? How reliable is this particular engine?

Is the 77' merc 500 a boat anchor or a race horse?

i GOT A 77 MERC 500 from a guy ive had virtally no trouble run super and has plenty of power but im not into 90 mph speed just some local fishing, only thing is check the wiring harness inside the cowl as they have been known to go badi just replaced some wires on mine like i say runs super BILL

Thanks! I'm not into 90 mph either -just a reliable engine that starts and runs to get me from point a -> b.

i have a 1973 merc 500 and have had no trouble with it except the wireharness but i made my own and it works great i have a 15.5 ft raycraft tri haul and mine does about 30-35 mph
