I am working on my johnson 1977 55hp outboard
I cleaned the carb twice, cleaned very well, cleaned all the linkage, installed re-built kits and 4 new fuel jets.
Now the motor has rebuilt carbs, rebuilt fuel pump, new water pump, new spark plugs, new fuel lines, new fuel tank and fittings, new gas, new battery..
The motor was able to start when I put it in the water today, it was running, idle was ok, dead on me a couple of times when the speed was very slow. both forward and backward worked well.
The problem is that the max speed was only 14 to 15 mph with one adult and two boys on board (about 500 pounds)! It ran upto 24.7 mph at one time, and the motor seemed close to die. and I was never able to reach that again. The motor seemed to close to die when I put the control all the way to the forward, even with that, the speed was only about 14 mph. any suggestions? it seems high speed problem, air mix? fuel problem? too less? too rich? timing? idle speed??????
how to fix it? this is my fist motor and my first time DIY. I have been working on this for several weeks.
help me out there., summer is here now!!
Thanks.
Tim
