Hello,

I am new to this forum and have a question about a 1977 6hp Johnson Seahorse that I am trying to get running. The first problem that I had to address was the water pump. I put in a new impeller and now it pumps great. Now I am trying to get it to idle. I have taken apart the carburetor and cleaned it thoroughly (it did not look dirty but I cleaned it anyway). The carburetor was re-built about two years ago. I replaced the spark plugs also. I have adjusted the knob on the carburetor every which way I can think of with no improvement. Basically, the engine will only start on high throttle and will not even idle down to the "start" position. Could it be a problem with the fuel pump? If anyone has any ideas, I would appreciate any help that is given. Thank you.

does it have the high and low speed adjustments on the carb? see the instructions in the top secret file that explains how to set.

also, maybe the gas is not so good?

It sounds like the low speed circuit in the carb is clogged. There are tiny passages under the metal welch plug on top of the carb (where the slow speed needle eventually goes). You can see them by looking through the carb throat from the motor side, at the top of the throat near the butterfly plate. A rebuild kit has a new welch plug in it, since you have to destroy the old one to get it out.
A fuel pump issue usually only shows up during high speed running, but anything is possible.

Thanks for the replies. I guess I'll go ahead and order a rebuild kit. There are two on this site, Sierra and Mallory. Do you prefer one over the other?
