I have a problem with the ignition on my motor, it fell off the boat about a month ago and I tore it all down and cleaned it out and put back together and it ran like new without a problem but yesterday I was going for a nice little fishing trip with a friend and when I tested it before we left I got nothing so I took the plug out there was no spark so I got a new plug, put it in and it fired right up but only ran for about 15 seconds and then would'nt start again so I took the plug out again and there was no spark. I'm completely lost as to whats going on. please help

Not at all sure where this might lead you, but...

You said you replaced the plug and got spark briefly.

Did you do ANYthing else at that time? I ask because you would have, to some degree, 'stressed' the plug wire in changing plugs.

There might be a lingering moisture track where the plug wire enters the coil.

I get spark on and off sometimes it starts for about 5 seconds and then nothing, its very random. I was very carefull with the wire for that reason but it acts like something is loose like it conects and disconects randomly.

Intermitten stuff like that usally means grounding problems, remove the SSI and clean the ground lug or just give it a wiggle loosen & tighten...be careful not to loosen the whole module at the same time or you may change your air gap. I see many of these with ground problems, follow the manuals specs to reinstall the Stator

I've never realy gone into the ignition system of a motor before so this is all new to me. Do you know where I can find an online manual so I know where to go? I dont even know half the stuff you just said as stupid as that may sound.

If it was the coil/pulset ransformer that fell off you may have messed up the connection where the spark plug wire goes into the PT, I usally take them on out clean up or replace the plug wire...there typical coils and have what looks like a nail for plug wire to be pushed into...use only copper core wires

Re: 1977 7.5 gamefisher ignition

I just orderd a new condenser and I just cleaned the points but can you tell me were the grounding lug is, now that I have the fly wheel off I want to realy go through it and do every thing I can to get it back to running order before I put the fly wheel back on. Also is the ground wire the green one?

I did not realize there was a points ignition model 7.5hp in 1977, what is your model number?
if its a points model then forget what I said about the grounding lug but, make sure you do get a correct & clean grounding

yes ground is always green or in some cases bare
