1977 75 hp - quits when shifting unless I rev it up some with warm up lever

doesnt miss a beat when tooling around the lake. but upon start up, and letting it warm up some, I find it hard to gradually shift forward or reverse from idle. I have to raise rpm with warm up lever and as I move lever back down and rpms slowly lower, I have to shift and it takes off without quitting. at the low idle, it will quit when shifted. Is it safe to say that the idle has to be moved up. everything else is great. thank you for the reply.

I've got the same issue with my 1975 70 HP johnny. So, I would like to see what to do about this myself. I can put it into forward pretty easy, but my reverse is not quite as forgiving. The main problem is that I am afraid to jsut slam it into reverse.

water surge, I dont want to slam it either and so far it isnt that I can tell, I feel no jolt and hear nothing of the slamming, so I feel it is okay for the time being until someone can help. someone told me it is timing or it is idle speed. I dont have a tach but am purchasing one soon now. so I guess until I have something else to go on, it may be awhile until I find something out.

before putting the boat in the water, remove the engine cover and the cover plate to expose the carbs. This part takes two people: while in the water,slow start to give it gas. As it starts to cut out, trying spraying carb cleaner in the top carb. If nothing happens and the engine still starts to cut out, spray it in the middle carb; and then the bottom carb. If the engine holds power while spraying carb cleaner, then that carb has clogged jets.
