I just purchased this motor, model # 85799. It turns over great, but it won't start, or even sputter. I checked the spark in all the plugs, that seems ok. I sprayed a little premix into the cylinder, still nothing. I checked the compression in all the cylinders #1=110psi,2=110psi,3=100psi,4=115psi. I have the warm up lever set to warm up, and I can see that the advance plate seems to be working. I haven't tried changing the plugs yet. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Compression is very borderline on ok. It should start regardless. Either not enough gas, or too much. Are the plugs wet?

Howdy, HBF.

Did you spray premix into the carbs? That might make a differnce.

If you have fuel, air, compression and spark (I would call your compression fine) you may have a timing problem.

Pull your flywheel and check the key. It may have sheared allowing the timing to be way off.

Good luck. :)

Re: 1977 85 hp evinrude won't start

I'm going to pick up some new plugs today, and give it another go. I'll spray into the carb and see what happens. What's a quick way to check the timing? Should I put No. 1 piston at TDC and see where the timing mark is? The guy I bought it from says that it was running last year, and it looks like the motor was fogged, so I'm hoping it's just fouled plugs.

I checked out the plug wires, they're in the right places. I'm going to pop off the flywheel this weekend, and check the timing. If that's alright, how can I check the power pack without any special tools? My friend says his evinrude had the same problem, and it had a spark, but they fixed the problem when they changed the power pack. I can't afford just to shotgun parts.

Distilled water, Chumbucket, though in the past I used tap water.

Water decarbing was very common in the 40s and 50s, even on cars. :)

Now that bottled water costs more than premium gasoline, maybe it is cheaper to pay ten bux for a spray can of commercial decarber. :D

Good news. I got the thing running. Changed the plugs, sprayed a lot of premix in carbs, it started up for a couple of seconds, then I shut it down. Thanks for the help.
