1977 Evinrude 140 - Longer driveshaft/lower unit extension?

Greets -

I'm running a 1981 Hydrasports 2100cc with a 1977 Evinrude 140 that I used to have on a 19 foot Renken cc. HSports used to run a 235 Johnson "Two Thirtsty Five."

The current 140 has a standard driveshaft/lower unit. I'm reasonably sure that on this boat, I need to lower the motor more for maximum prop bite. I'm running a new Solus 4 blade, but still seem to be getting some aeration. I have the Rude attached to a plate, but can only lower the plate slightly before the motor's steering shaft/mechanism bites into my transom when trimmed. Seems the solution might be to put on a 4 inch extender and longer driveshaft into the lower unit?

Can anyone advise on what I'd need to accomplish this -and whether it's a stupid idea?

Photo below of boat in our creek at low tide. The 'mud mark' around the lower unit below the propellor shows the normal water level on the lower unit when the tide comes up.

Thanks very much.

Simply take the jack plate off the boat and its the right length engine !!!!
or get a 8 inch setback and put that between boat and jack plate, then bolt motor on that.
you need the right type of props for anything jacked up.and they are just for high speed and cost a fortune !!!

best thing is to take plate off and send it to me,
i need a proper adjustable jackplate on my boat, ive made one but it dont adjust :blue:
cant get them over here in any of the boat shops ive been in.

i would simply take the jack plate off the boat and try with original settings like intended.
its worth a try and if it works nice its free easy job to do,no having to bodge up the rude.

but i would no way look for a leg extender, too much agro and too expensive if you do ever manage to find one.
by putting on a leg extension your adding un-needed weight and going to be making the engine top heavy as will need
to raise it up a touch etc to get right height for the prop again.
By simply taking the plate off you have it perfect, you have 4 holes to play around with and the engine will be perfect in
the splashwell !!!!!!

that prop needs to be on the transom and the engine raised just 1 hole, if you raise it fully on the engine bracket it will
still find too much air and slip like mad, down low it should bite pretty fair.

let me know when you want my address so i can get rid of that plate for you,ill pay the postage

Hey Phil,
Thanks for the reply! According to the mech who did the transplant, the Evinrude motor is definitely too short to run without either the plate or a longer lower unit. The 235 on previous was longer. I'd love to run it straight on the transom with no plate. Help me find a longer drive and i'll make a deal on the plate. ;)
