took my recently purchased boat out on the water for the first time over labor day weekend. Boat idles great but bogs down when i throttle up. then it would idle and when i put in gear it would die. went home to clean carbs, when i went to remove high speed jet it is stuck will not move. i am buying three new bowls for carbs, three rebuilt kits for carb, rebuild kit for fuel pump, and a new impeller.

I checked the compression on all three cylinders here's what I got #1 (119psi), #2 (120psi), #3 (120psi), is this reading good?

is there anymore ideas that anyone can throw my way?

can I use fuel line that you buy at a local auto store for the engine?

i also found the ground wire into the powerbox was corroded, when i went to remove it, it snaped. could this of been the problem. i seem to get great spark on all three plugs. How much is the stator subosed to advance?

thanks for all the info?

hi there i sorry to say that i have no ideas about your problems but i have a 1977 70hp johnson also and have no power as well. i don't know much about boat motors and i have had mine looked at two or three times and i still have the problem. mine will start fine and idle fine but when i hit the gas it doesn't want to do anything. so we might be in the same boat!!:) but if you find anything that helps you out please let me know maybe it can help me as well. thanks

Marine fuel line is different from automotive. I think it's fire retardant. It will have a USCG approval.

In both cases I would have to say that only 2 of three cylinders are working. things to ask are , do you have :spark? fuel? compression and (my last thought of one) leaking gasket?
there are many ways to look for the answer to these question the hardest one is the leaking gasketor seal. pick up a book for you engine and slowly go threw the trouble shooting tips. take notes and welcome yourself to the world of outboard repair.

automotive, alcohol resistant fuel line is fine on an outboard. you both sound like you have atleast one dirty carb. http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=244013 be sure to keep the parts for each carb separate, and mark the center carb, as it is different. and the jets back into the correct postion. after the carb rebuild, a link n sinc, would be inorder. this is a step by step, procedure, directions in your manuals, it syncronizes the timing advance, and carbs so they work together at the proper time.
