1977 Evinrude 9.9 motor cover what other years will fit?

I have a 1977 Evinrude 9.9 and it's in mint condition except for the motor cover. I'd like to find a replacement for it so I plan on putting a wanted ad in the local classified. I need to know what other model years and HP will fit my motor. The 1974 through 1991 9.9 hp and 15 hp seem very similar but I'm not 100% sure. Anyone know?

Why don't you give these guys a call? It's an old outboard junkyard that is about an hour from me. I've seen their wall of old engine hoods, I'm sure they have one that will work. They weren't exactly cheap but if you can't find one anywhere else....

I believe you are good until 1986.
This is when Evinrude / Johnson moved the thermostat to the upper cylinder head.
With the thermostat on the top, the 1977 cover will not fit

The 9.9 & 15hp upper cowlings all would interchange. The 1974 thru approx. early 1986 Johnson all were the same size & shape. The Evinrude's had a slight bevel on the upper outer corners for the early models & I am not sure if or when they changed to the Johnson sharp cornered style. For the mid 1986 to 1992 they will also fit, they had the upper outer corners with a 1" angle bevel. All the above will interchange.

To verify, I just went out & put my 1992 cowling onto a 1977, & tried the 77 on the 92 both fit fine.

Thats great machinist! I appreciate you taking the time to actually do a test fit for me.
Thanks to everyone for your quick replies. I posted my want ad and had 2 replies within half an hour and I'm going to look at a 1979 Evinrude 9.9 cover in the morning.
