1977 evinrude kicking out

I just finished restoring my party barge,and after several trips out to test controls and steering,I took out some friends.on the run in my 1977 35 horse evinrude started trying to kick out of gear.at high throttle it is running fine but about every 5 to 8 seconds it kicks hard.I ran the motor with the cowling off and watched the shifter leaver and shifter linkage kick out to neut and back in to forward.I recently replaced all motor mounts so I thought that my shifter linkage was not set correctly.after checking and adjusting said linkage I ran the motor again on muffs.still kicking.any help?

It sounds like it could be a bad clutch dog/ forward gear. Very common problem. Comes from rough shifting over the years. What happens is the ears of the gear and clutch dog are rounded so when they meet, they can only take so much pressure before the slip. Generally only happens when at full throttle. Kind of feels like you're hitting a stump.

By the way, not a great idea to run the outboard at full throttle on muffs. Should only be done when the unit is submerged in water.

Yeah on full on muffs.trying to see kick out probs.found prob.was clutch dog.wonder if re surfacing dog will fix prob.can't afford new and won't put back bad.Also wondering,Heard easy shifting will cause this.I have been easing into gear for as long as i can remember and this is first prob.All other motors work fine.

Just a follow up.Clutch dog ,Forward Gear gone.Shifting very important.Also learned that 2 ear clutch dog and 3 ear clutch dog,very diff animal.

Did you recently replace the water pump impeller (during overhaul?)

same thing happened to mine a few years go. i have a pin prop and it was shearing my cotter pin and spinning off my prop nut. i lost 3 props diagnosing it. kicked hard to one side every 4-5 seconds at WOT.

Final Thoughts from disgusted to heart broken.After all my hard work got all together and while assembling lower unit found small crack in housing on lower side near drain hole.Is in location that I have been told can not be fixed.$350.00 for new lower end housing. Gonna get diff motor.Looking at 1977 70 horse.Boat is good for up to 125 horse.Dont think a 35 horse on a 24 foot pontoon boat good idea.
