Hello, I have a 1977 Evinruude outboard motor 140hp (Model Number 140783S) on a boat we got last year but haven't really done much with it until now. It runs however there seems to be an issue with the throttle/shifter as it is difficult to get into gear and the shifter doesn't do much until its pressed all the way forward. In fact it is difficult to get it into gear without killing it (in water) but it seems to runs fine when it does. The boat cant even get on plane because it goes slow and I think the cord might be loose or something as it feels like it is not fully engaging, I am not sure, Anyways, I was hoping to find a Manuel for this motor/shifter (as i think they come together normally?) but am having a little difficulty determining and finding which one I need that will cover this sort of thing or even one that just states it covers this particular motor. I dont mind if I have to buy a Manuel online but if you know which one would work perhaps you could link it to me?

I have a fried who is a mechanic that said if I get the Manuel it should cover how to properly check the cable linkage and stuff so I figured I would do that and we can work on it together. Also, if you have any idea what might be the cause such as a loose cable or what it might be I would really appreciate any input. Additionally, I am not 100% sure if this is a 2 stroke motor but i am pretty sure it is and was wondering what the fuel ratio was, perhaps that would be state din the Manuel. The current fuel is blueish so it seems there is oil in there and it actually smells ok for being in their over a year. Probably should git rid of that.

I looked for other threads regarding this but couldn't quite find this question so I decided to post myself. If I broke any rules I apologize as I am a first time poster here. Thanks for your input!

Go to Ken Cooks website, you can order factory manuals from there. Make sure to order using your model number to get the correct manual. fuel/oil ratio is 50 to 1.

The manuals typically don't go into great detail concerning the remote control. Your model may vary.

Your fuel is a 50-1 mix. You also need to do a compression and spark test before anything

And....don't neglect the boat. (e.g., Weight from water soaked foam under the floor.)
