Can someone provide me with some detailed, step by step instructions on how top get this motor to run smooth ('77 55hp Evinrude)? When I am able to get the thing to start (with the warm up lever up) it either runs wide open or after having eased off on the warmup lever it bypasses idle and shuts off. So basically I can not get it to idle. By the time I go to put it in gear, it dies.

I have cleaned both carbs. Plugs look half way decent. Got new gas with a product called Sea Foam in it. HELP!

Get a manual and do as Walker says. The manual says you are SUPPOSED to start the motor with the warm up lever up. In the front of the control housing there is an adjustable stop for the warm up lever.

My 77 55hp is/was doing the same thing. You do need to let the motor warm up before it will idle. I need to check to see if the thermostat is there and working. The motor is supposed to run hotter at idle and low rpm which should help the idle. My motor has app 150 psi in each cyl but the main brgs are a little loose which probably costs me some secondary compression.

See if there is any play in yours by grabbing the flywheel and pulling it back and forth. ANY play is not good. I was going to try and replace the upper crank seal buy it looks nearly impossible with the motor together.

My motor runs good at cruising speed and wot [ which it doesn't get subjected to very much ]. I finally got po'ed with mine and just screwed in the idle screw on the adv lever until the motor idled in reverse without dying. I have redone the carbs since then with OEM kits and have not had a chance to test it since. Hope to tomorrow.
