Seeing all these cool Glastron boats on here recently I got to looking on Craigslist. Today I came across the one in the pictures below. It is supposed to be a 17ft 1977 Glastron of some sort. I have the HIN but nothing else for it. From googling a bit it looks like it could be the outboard version of the SSV-176 but I don't know for sure. Does anyone here know? I have only exchanged a few texts with the lady selling it so I don't know how long it's been sitting like this yet. She's asking $250 for the boat and the trailer. It has no floors, no seats and no motor. I am thinking if the boat is a total bust the trailer might be worth $250. For an additional $300 she's willing to throw in a 50HP Mercury from 1975.

Is this something I should run from or is it worth a closer look and possibly a purchase? Looks like it could be a fun project! It is local here in Georgia so registration etc shouldn't be a problem.

Yes, that is an SSV-176, the 175 was the inboard version. I have the exact same boat sitting in my driveway right now, that I got for $200 with no motor, mine is a 1981, I am currently stripping it down and will be disposing of the hull so I can use the trailer on my newly acquired Starcraft. With that one being partially torn down, I woud check that transom to make sure it has not started to rot from the bottom up. Ask them how long it has been sitting with nothing in it, they make great bath tubs when they are gutted like that and the water gets to the bottom of the transom.

I just talked to the lady and she explained it had a floor but it had rotted so they had pulled it out about a week ago. So it hasn't been sitting wide open very long. I'm figuring those stringers will need to be replaced and I'm also thinking the transom will need work based on what I've read in this forum. I've seen others take the cap off and figure this would need that as well. After thinking about it a bit more, it would take quite a bit to get this one back. Besides the hull and floor I'd also have to make new seats. I have seen Archbuilders work on Miss Morgan. Based on the pictures I've seen of this one, it should have the back-to-back seats like Arch's.

MTboatguy, based on your post yours wasn't worth restoring? Makes me wonder if this one would be worth it?

The one I have would be well worth restoring, I have done all the checking on this one that needs and is recommended if it was being purchased to use and it is a very nice solid boat, transom is good which I have verified with core tests, the floor is solid and clean, which was verified when I cut part of it to get the gas tank out of it to use in my Starcraft. Where I live not many restores get done due to the fact we have a very short boating season and many don't have garages to store or do work in during the long winters we have. Normally we have snow on the ground just aobut 6 months of the year and very cold temps for close to the same amount of time. Without a garage or some kind of shop doing restoration work is not all that easy. Most boats that need a full restore are thrown away, we can still take old boats to our landfill for little or no cost.

I have 5 boats and did not have it in me to restore another one the proper way, so it is going to the dump, but it has held up very well over the years and would be a good restoration project for someone.

Oh, I see, for some reason I thought you had bought it for the trailer. My mistake. But I do understand about the long cold winters. I grew up in such a place myself. Where I am now in Georgia I just have my garage which I share with the wife's car. My truck has to stay in the driveway. So I don't have too much space. I did manage to build my little 13-foot PM38 in there though. The more I think about this Glastron the more I think I'll need to pass on it. I do appreciate the information you shared though.
