1977 115 hp
rebuilt carbs and put everything back together. motor wont fire at all. motor ran poorly before carb rebuild, but it did run. had been sitting since 1986

motor WILL fire if i remove plugs and squirt fuel into cylinders... then it fires and sputters for about 2 seconds...

when i squeeze the fuel bulb, fuel comes out the front of the carbs and dripps out.

i just replaced all fuell lines and fittings/ clamps, and all are good, no leaks..

with plugs removed and engine turning over, fuel does NOT fly out the back of the plug holes. i know im not getting it from the carbs to the motor. but what would prevent this.? any ideas
compression is 160 on all cylinders.

mike

You have spark do you?How is the fuel pump working?Pull the line of the fuel pump that goes to the carbs, and see that the fuel pump is infact working.Crank it over for a few secs, and observe that their is fuel coming out.It should come out in spurts. Good Luck

Re: 1977 inline 6 carbs question

Just a thought, but if it's anything like my 74 150, it is very, very cold-natured. Make sure you prime the bulb really hard and try to flood it (you can't). I usually have fuel dripping from several carburetors before I crank it. If I do that and choke it with the warm up lever raised, it will usually start within 5-10 seconds. Until someone told me about trying to flood it at start up, I would wind the starter for 20-30 seconds and nothing would happen. Hope you get it going soon..

Re: 1977 inline 6 carbs question

EDIT: UPDATE:
pulled fuel pump hose and nothing comes out..except for the lil bit that was in there from squeezing the bulb.. BUT with fuel dripping from the carbs and the floats full of fuel, wouldnt it still at least sputter some?

i have spark on all 6 cylinders, man do i love timing lights

i had this similar prob with my 6orse johnson, had fuel , spark, compression... turned out the lower crakshaft seal was bad and fuel pump was bad and wasnt getting enough crankcase pressure to "suck" the fuel into the cylinders

thanks for the help so far amd for the help to come

Re: 1977 inline 6 carbs question

Mike, Your last post left me confused. I had thought there was no fuel in the carb bowls. If this is the case look in the carb bowl covers for a small screen. It is about 1/2 the size of a dime and is under the brass fitting that allows the fuel into the carb. These rust and clog.

If you have sufficient fuel, and the spark is strong enough to fire the fuel you spray into the motor, maybe there are air leaks in the carb base gasket, or the choke isn't working well. Can you keep it running by spraying fuel into the carb throats?
