A friend of mind is getting ride of his 17.5ft runabout. It's a mid 80's hull and I'm not sure of the make. It does have a late 70's Chrysler 135 outboard on it. The boat is in Texas and has been sitting outside in the dry heat for 10 years and not run. The motor was in good running order when it was last parked. My Question is: What work do I want to do to the engine prior to trying to turn it over? I was thinking that I would stip the head off of it and inspect the cylinder walls. Soak the rings with penetrating oil for a couple of days and then try and rotate the motor manually. If the cylinder walls look good, go ahead and install a new head gasket and perform a compression check to see what I've got to work with. I've never really messed with outboards before so I appreciate any comments people have. Is this a good idea or should I avoid removing the head and spray penetrating oil in spark plug holes? (or maybe I'm off track all together, please feel free to be blunt).
If the engine has good compression, I plan to rebuild the carbs and fuel pump and try to get it running.
Was the Chrysler 135 a good motor? Is it work putting a few dollars into?
Thanks,
Jake
