I have a 1977 Johnson 25 with electric choke. I've rebuilt the carb replaced all fuel lines and I can't get it to start. It's getting spark. The float bowl is full. I did notice when I took the screw out if the top of the carb there is a little needle stuck in the carb. Is this needle suppose to come out when I unscrew that screw?

Update. I adjusted the float and it starts up and then dies. Do I need to adjust the float more? Is it getting flooded?

I think the problem is the little needle that goes on the lean/rich screw is stuck in the carb and I can't get it out

ok...are you describing the brass idle mxture needle that screws horizontally into the top of the carb?..you have removed this from the carb and the needle end has broken off the brass body and remains in the cylinder it screws into?

Yes. But I just replaced it and it still will not stay running. Do you know what the float height is supposed to be?

So I called a shop here and they said the float should be level. I got the float leveled but it won't start. When I turn the key on the electric choke flap closes. I noticed you can adjust how far it closes. Does anybody know how close it should be? I'm thinking maybe it's getting choked out to much and getting flooded?

from a light seat, your idle mixture needle should be backed out 1 and 1/2 turns as a starting point for adjustment...engines can differ a little in starting procedure...is the carb roller slightly beyond the mark on the timing cam when you have it in your starting position?.. in this position is the throttle butterfly just barely open?..if so, the engine should attempt to fire with the choke plate fully closed. If it does fire, click the choke off, and try to restart immediately. If it starts but won't run, try a half choke position to keep it running. In my experience, these small outboards don't like the full choke but for only a small period of time...3 seconds or so.

I discounted the electric choke completely and it fired right up. Now it won't turn off with the key. I have to choke it out for it to turn off. I bought the boat used and it has been sitting awhile so I'm just going through it. Any ideas on it not shutting off? The model number is 25E77S. 1977 Johnson 25

So I looked at the ignition switch and it has a B I S on the back. I have a black and yellow wire and a black wire not connected to anything. The old switch had 6 connectors on it. Should I find another one or does anybody know what I should hook the two black wires too?

the wires you mention are for your kill switch and is the reason you cant stop it. it sounds like you need a wiring diagram to get it straight. :)

you will need a 6 con. switch and if it's electric choke you will need one with the push to choke feature.
