I have a 1977 25hp Johnson, motor start great runs great, but...when you get it to push down the lake it like tacks out a loses the pushing power. I haven't never noticed it slipping out of gear, but it "seems" to, but only under a load. I wonder if the prop was just slipping on the rubber insert, as I can make it slip, or if there is clutches or something that could be slipping and a way to adjust them. Also what is the cheapest prop I could put on this motor. I am a poor county boy with 6 kids, and sure would like to go fish with them soon. thanks in advance!

Hi Ya' kickin.....

If the engine revs real high and ya' don't get no where fast, then more than likely the prop hub is spun. The hubs can be replaced pretty cheap so ya may not need a new prop. Also, usually getting the existing prop rebuilt is a lot cheaper than a new one.

Hi, Its the propeller. I have the exact same motor that had the exact same problem. There is a way to rig it so it will work. thats if there is no way you can afford a new prop. You can drill a small hole in the propeller and put a short screw in there just long enough to screw into the rubber insert. If you dont know exactly where the insert is in the prop, put the engine in gear and turn the prop so it will slip and pull out at the same time with the propnut off. then you will see what im talking about with the screw. It should be a 91/4x11 or 9x10 prop. You could probably find a good one on ebay for $50.

Kickin....check with a dealership or look in the yellow pages of the phone book for prop repair. And as tawd said, e-bay is another source. But I must respectfully disagree with tawds suggestion of putting a screw in the prop. The idea of the rubber hub is to protect the gear case in the event of a collision with objects in the water. Putting a srew into the hub may defeat this purpose.
