Ok so I finally broke down and split the case on my 1977 Johnson 70 horse as some of you already advised. I was redoing the exhaust manifold gaskets and found rusty water in the exhaust ports and I could see the scored pistons so I tore it down. It doesn't look pretty to me but it's been a long time since I have rebuilt an engine. I was already planning on replacing pistons, rings, all bearings, and all seals. Now I don't know if it is even salvageable for a reasonable amount of money. What do you guys think? I am most concerned about the crankshaft and crank case bearing journals. Will this clean up or does it need to be machined and oversized bearings installed? What kind of work would it take to fix the crankcase bearing journals? I haven't pulled apart the main bearings or separated the connecting rods yet. The cylinders do have some really, really light scoring. I can just barely feel it with my finger. What would it take to rebuild this one?
